Alabama is one of only four states in the country that limits alcohol by volume (ABV) for beer to only 6%, and the only state that limits beer containers to a size of no more than 1 pint (16 American ounces).
In May of 1997, Governor Fob James signed into law legislation allowing for beer to be up to 6% alcohol by volume from a previous 5%. That was a start toward broadening the stylistic horizons of Alabama's beer world, but is not nearly enough.
Some visitors not from Alabama may be surprised to find "dry" counties in the state. In these counties, beverages that contain alcohol cannot be sold. Seven of these dry counties contain "wet" cities (cities selling alcohol inside dry counties).
Some counties have passed special laws overriding these package size restrictions, but there are only a couple. Draft beer is illegal in Alabama unless the county has passed a special law allowing draft beer. There are a few of these. The alcohol limit and the package restriction we believe to be unfortunate as it prevents entire styles of beer available to the rest of the country from being available in Alabama.
We do, however, bring in many beers for sale to the military only. Some of these are over 6% abv and are in larger package sizes. Not bound by the state restriction, the military has the opportunity to continue to enjoy the beers they have found in the US and the world over.
Will this law ever change?
