MOBILE, Ala. – Sun Belt Conference play begins this weekend with a slate of series of mostly in-state rivalries. Among these rivalries is one in the deep-south between two programs looking to repeat the success of last season, yet without having to again share a conference title. As conference play closed last season the Troy Trojans and the South Alabama Jaguars were co-champions of the Sun Belt Conference with identical 20-10 conference records. The teams went 3-3 against each other with each scoring 39 runs. South Alabama finished the year averaging 6.8 runs a game while the Trojans finished at 7.1. South Alabama allowed 5.1 runs a game while Troy allowed 4.6. Talking with both head coaches one realizes that they recognize playing against each other is a lot like looking in the mirror, last season and this season as well. The teams are allowing only about a quarter of a run different and both teams are struggling for offensive consistency. Trojans’ head coach Bobby Pierce said that, “the consistency of our lineup is just behind where we had hoped to have it…biggest problem is consistent run production,” and that to address it he has been focusing on, “improving the approach and production at the plate.” Jaguars’ head coach Mark Calvi has seen some success with timely hitting the last two weekends and credits the hard work his players have put in, “guys have more ownership of at bats and awareness of situations…we’re getting better at bats in a timely fashion.” ( Full Article) iconTroy3
