TROY – With their season on the line, the Troy Trojans beat the Texas State Bobcats at their own game Saturday night at Trojan Arena.
The Trojans limited the Bobcats inside all night, outrebounding Texas State 40-26 en route to a 72-50 win and a berth in next week’s Sun Belt tournament.
A loss by Troy would have ended its season
Troy is 11-19 and 6-12 in conference. Texas State is 8-23, 5-13.
“We picked a great time to probably play our best overall game of the entire season,” Trojans head coach Phil Cunningham said. “We shot 48 percent from the field, and they are one of the best defensive teams in the league.”
The game was pretty close in the first half, but the Trojans scored the last five points of the stanza to take a 33-26 lead into halftime.
The Trojans then tallied the second half’s first 10 points, and the rout was on.
“They rebounded pretty well in the first half, and we’ve been talking about defense all year, so we wanted to come out in the second half and get some stops,” senior point guard
Hunter Williams said. “When we get stops, it leads to offense for us. We got out and got some fastbreak points.”
From there, the Bobcats sliced the Troy lead to as low as 13 on a Kavin Gilder-Tilbury 3-pointer with 11:59 left. The Trojans scored the next seven points to grab a 20-point lead, and that advantage rarely got below that mark the rest of the way.
The story of the game was the role reversal the Trojans pulled on Texas State from the last matchup.
The Trojans dominated the paint, outscoring the Bobcats 38-22 in the lane. Last time out Texas State dominated Troy 40-16 in that category.
Joel Wright and Emani Gant combined for 37 points and 17 rebounds in the last contest and just had seven points and nine rebounds on Saturday.
“I believe everyone’s mentality was everyone knew it was do-or-die,” Trojans forward Kevin Thomas, who had 13 points, said. “I think we just came in ready for this game.”
“I thought we took our toughness level to the highest level we’ve shown all year,” Cunningham added. “That was certainly the key because they’re a physical team.” (Full Article)
