With his team battling for one of the final spots in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Troy Trojans head coach Phil Cunningham has recently emphasized stronger defense. After limiting the last two opponents to 54 points per game, the Trojans hope to continue the strong defensive play in the critical last week of conference games. They get their first chance to do so against Texas-Arlington tonight at Trojan Arena at 7 p.m. “We talked about defense, and we were good defensively against (Arkansas-Little Rock). We held them to 40 percent from the field, 62 points,” Cunningham said of the 62-55 loss to the other Trojans. “To the guys’ credit, they bounced back (from the loss). We were good defensively again against ULM. “A lot of teams would have hung their head knowing they’re going on the road against a very efficient offensive team and did what we did to them – held them to 46 points.” The 61-46 win against Louisiana-Monroe helped the Trojans tremendously in the chase for the last two spots in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. One win this week nearly guarantees the Trojans a spot in the event, although if that one win is against Texas-Arlington, one scenario exists that would keep Troy out. A win against Texas State on Saturday guarantees Troy a tournament berth. ( Full Article) iconTroy3
