Just jotting a few thoughts down on Troy’s upcoming baseball season, which opens Friday against Northern Kentucky… 2013 overview: What a season the Troy Trojans had last year. The club had an 18-game home winning streak at one point and had RPI numbers reach as low as the mid-20s. Behind a hot close (remember, Troy started out 8-7 in conference play last year), the Trojans earned an invite to the NCAA tournament. In Tallahassee, the Trojans knocked off Alabama before getting walloped by Florida State. Down to their final at-bat in another game with Alabama, the Trojans stormed back with four runs to avoid elimination. The Trojans, though, fell to Florida State in the regional championship. What Troy loses: A LOT of offense. Everyone will talk about the departures of 3B Logan Pierce, 1B Trae Santos and RF Danny Collins – who combined to have 201 RBIs – but let’s not forget the season Josh McDorman had. McDorman batted .322 and had six homers, 42 runs scored and 38 RBIs. The bullpen also took some hits as “Pinball Wizard” Nate Hill, the closer, and setup man Thomas Austin both have graduated. What Troy brings back: A ton of starting pitching and high-quality defensive players. Shane McCain, the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year, really had a strong charge down the stretch last year and tied for the league lead with nine wins. No. 2 starter Tanner Hicks had a consistently strong year and won eight games. ( Full Article) iconTroy3
