The school’s website recognizes that its “formal and official name” is the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. But, in addition to the Ragin’ Cajuns’ “We are Louisiana” campaign, the ULL folks have some other interesting things going on. Just visit the school’s website, and you will see that:
• ULL has dropped the “ull.edu” website domain as “not compatible with the University’s name and nickname policy.” • Official University “rules” on the school’s website, which is now “louisiana.edu” state: “Do not refer to the University as ULL in any instance.” Huh! Guess what abbreviation is NOT prohibited, “in any instance?” You got it, “UL.” • And finally, the university’s website includes a link to Balfour, which is selling the school’s class rings. If you go to the link, you’ll see that the ring prominently displays, “University of Louisiana 1898.” What you won’t see prominently displayed is the word “Lafayette.” It doesn’t take much imagination to figure out that the University of Southern Louisiana has breached its partnership agreement with Northeast Louisiana University or at least a few misguided folks at NLU. And I believe that the moves made by ULL — oops, that’s taboo — are clever, and probably legal. ( Full Article)
